EP04 | Connecting the Indian Ocean World:近代印度洋歷史研究

Why Did the Safavid Dynasty of Iran Dispatch a Diplomatic Mission to Thailand in the Seventeenth Century? How Did the Opium Trade and Monsoons Shape Early Patterns of Exchange in This Maritime Region?

In this episode, we delve into these questions through the lens of Connecting the Indian Ocean World, a collection of essays published in 2023. We explore how contemporary scholarship has increasingly centred the Indian Ocean as a distinct regional framework for historical inquiry, while also introducing some of the volume’s most intriguing chapters.

☯ About the book ☯

Connecting the Indian Ocean World examines the many overlapping linkages that existed from the early modern period and into the colonial era. It offers a clear understanding of the economic networks that extended across the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic during the 19th century. With a critical historical lens, the volume discusses themes like the opium trade in the Malay-Indonesian Archipelago – the biggest opium trade market at the time; the Safavid mission to Siam; and the economic relationship between Pondicherry and West Africa, via France.
