Much store is held in leaders being their authentic selves – in revealing their vulnerability and showing empathy, whilst being decisive, clear and strategic. And herein lies the paradox. Can we be both? As leaders we need to be mindful of how we ‘show up’ to our people – our teams, clients and stakeholders. Our behaviours, professional identities and personal leadership styles are closely and constantly scrutinised.
Do leaders who model authenticity run the risk of being called out as indecisive or lacking in confidence? The reality is of course far more complex, with leaders needing to navigate their professional behaviours and personal styles with nuance and subtlety.
