As a family doctor in the aptly named town of Medicine Hat in the Canadian province of Alberta, Hasmukh Patel realised that elder care in the community was inadequate and institutional. His answer: to design and build his own care facility, in partnership with the local authority, to provide a home from home for older people. Today he has 55 care homes, with around 9,000 residents and 11,000 staff.
“I think I saw a problem, and I thought of a solution”, he says of his transformation from physician to entrepreneur. Hasmukh chats to Kathy about the transition from his childhood in Kenya to medical school on the chilly east coast of Scotland, and then the big move to life in rural Canada. He reflects on the confidence the Oxford Executive MBA gave him to move forward in his business and reveals his remaining entrepreneurial ambitions.
