In this episode of Revive Your Life Podcast, I dive deeper into a topic that's come up in previous episodes: inside-out vs. inside-in thinking. An indispensable tool in developing your relationship with yourself, inside-out thinking allows you to finally make sense of outside experiences in the here and now. It provides a crucial first step to understanding your behaviors and motivations, so that you may begin cultivating a deeper knowing of what YOU actually want and who you truly are. In this episode, I sat down with former client of mine, Jack. Jack walks us through how therapy helped cure his codependency and depression, boosted his confidence and catapulted his career into previously unimagined heights. From being a chronic people pleaser in service of others to finally recognizing his own self-worth, Jack recounts how it was he dove so deeply into therapy and achieved such inspiring results. Any goal, aspiration or desire we go after in our lifetime will require us to step outside our comfort zone in order to obtain it. So how do you react when you experience things get hard and uncomfortable along the way? Do you have a clear enough understanding of your SELF to handle adversity without giving up, making excuses, letting your mood decide your destiny or beating yourself up? This is something most people don’t have, and not because they don’t want to do the work or haven’t tried to improve themselves, but because none of us are not taught to prioritize our needs and interests, or even think for ourselves. We are taught to think about others and how they will respond to us and/or reward us. We of course do this obediently to survive and sometimes thrive in this world as a child and adolescent.
However, what we understand about the outside world doesn’t translate to understanding our inside world or sense of self. We are left with what feels like a chasm between our inner and outer life that can feel impossible to bridge and the roles we learn to play in society isn’t enough to get us through our adult life and the complexities of relationships, spouses, family and finances.
It is my goal to educate people of how necessary the work of self-development and self-awareness is for anyone who would ever want to find purpose in their life, set and obtain goals that are meaningful, be in a fulfilling relationship, or become financially successful - for all of this and more you will need a strong understanding of WHY you think, feel, behave they way you do as well as how your past draws a blueprint for your future if you are not able to recognize these often self-defeating patterns.
In this episode we explore:

Listener Review: I enjoyed this episode thoroughly- reinforces your point about the body/mind connection and how what we put into our bodies has a direct effect on how we feel. This is definitely going to have an influence on what I put in my shopping basket tomorrow!
LESSON - being clear about AND speaking for your needs is an essential skill. One listener says: "I found it relatable how Bob was so engaged and thoughtful when it came to his girlfriend's situation but not very thoughtful when it came to his own needs and feelings. I definitely want to share this one with a friend of mine who married someone who has teenage kids from a previous marriage- she would probably get a lot out of it!"
Join myself and Josh on a journey into the multi-faceted issues he faced in a blended family relationship. One listener says they personally took away from "is the silver lining around codependents- when they do claim their personal power and self-worth, they have the ability to enter into a future relationship where their inherent generosity is appreciated and reciprocated. They do have a lot to offer someone, so long as they first make themselves a priority."
"There are insights here that are like a month's worth of therapy sessions. I can to relate to it all, the conflict-driven family dynamic, seeing how Lorna contributed to the situation, the yearning for belonging, trauma, how to self-parent...it was all in there! This one is automatically one of my favorites. I am definitely sharing it and linking it to my friend - she's going through a similar type situation in her family and she'd benefit greatly from this, 100%."
What they are saying: "This was a solid episode! Nehemiah was a great guest and it was nice to have a different perspective on a Christian worldview rather than a secular one. Also a good conversation about the holistic experience of self-care, needing to take care of the body and establishing healthy time management and routines in addition to the emotional work. It definitely reminded me that I have some more work to do in this area, and I think other men will feel the same."
It is a rare occasion when a therapist gets to see a previous client again and hear about how they’ve been doing...from the inside-out. There is a different level of knowing someone a therapist and it is a true privilege for me to be able to share Frank’s process with you and how, after therapy, he can reflect and reconnect to himself. This is the path we all must take, and it is an ongoing journey. As always stay curious and open so you can listen inward and learn about yourself through this work!

Top Review: "I think this will hit home for a lot of people! There's so much material in this session about wanting to appear 'well put together' while existing or coming from a chaotic home life; keeping those that are helpful at a distance, holding on to a marital oath at the expense of emotional/personal responsibility, and finally finding similarity and empathy for oneself and their parents that was so relatable!"
Telling it Like it is..IS harder than it looks. Join us as we talk about the ins & outs and how's & why's straight talk is so important to learn how to do and use in our daily lives and relationships. Here is what one listener says: "You and David covered a lot of ground. On the subject of 'saying how it is'- I immediately recalled my personal experience of not speaking to what I wanted and how I was feeling and indeed it was out of a place of self-preservation. Your listeners will get a lot out of this really important lesson. A killer episode, truly."
