Hawaii’s Wildfire, Colonialism, and Climate Change
Yes, climate change is partly to blame for the Lahaina fire that ravaged Maui, Hawaii. Drought conditions and intense hurricane winds created fire conditions. But there's another element that fueled this Hawaiian wildfire - colonialism. Colonial plantations introduced invasive species of grasses, and once the landowners abandoned their property, the invasive plants spread, and a natural disaster was waiting to happen. As Hawaii rebuilds and the Maui community heals, Lahaina will need to make a choice to favor locals and its rich culture or outside investors and tourism.
