Since 2020, there has been regime change in the Sahel countries Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. These three countries are today run by military juntas that have geared towards an isolationist effort. The European commission reported that about 94 million people in the sahel need humanitarian aid and that about 5 million people are displaced in the region. Lack of necessities and resources for survival are plaguing the region with political instability and climate change displacing the majority of these people. How did we get here? What has caused the political instability and what does the future hold for the Sahel? To help us answer these questions, we have brought on today’s guest, Jesper Bjarnesen. Jesper is a senior researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala, where he does qualitative research on regional issues related to francophone Africa. With deep understanding and knowledge of the idiosyncrasies of the region, Jesper enlightens us with the knowledge, insights and understanding of the historical context necessary to understand the future of the Sahel.
