Episode 1: Doug Garner, Head Coach of UT Arlington Movin’ Mavs
Doug Garner has been head coach of the UT-Arlington Mavs since 2008, won his most recent championship in 2017, and had an undefeated 2019-2020 season coming into last year's cancelled national tournament. He previously served on the board of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association representing the Junior Division. Coach Garner has sent numerous players from his program overseas to professional careers and to the Paralympic Games. In this episode, we discuss the unique 2020-2021 season and how the Mavs have been balancing safety and preparation for the National Tournament, as well as the future of the classification system, the importance of keeping talented players in the sport after graduation, and the potential for growth for wheelchair basketball in the United States. Thanks for listening to the first episode of Push Podcast. I hope you enjoyed this episode and want to keep learning about a unique and exciting sport. Special thanks to Doug Garner for being my first guest and answering some tough questions about this season and the future of wheelchair basketball. For more wheelchair basketball content, follow my instagram @push_sports_mag.To learn more about the UTA movin' mavs or check out their wheelchair basketball performance database, visit www.uta.edu/movinmavs. See you all next episode, until then keep pushing.
