Angelica Hillard has risen from the daughter of peasant farmers to a darling of the West End stage, and is now the wealthiest woman in England. At twenty-three, she is widowed, beautiful, and unfathomably rich. Among the noblemen eager to offer her the one thing she lacks - rank - stands the Duke of Devonshire: the man she loved in the shadows when she was still on the stage. Yet before they can wed, a lie tears them apart, and Angelica’s final ascent is undone. For there are many in the ton who cannot bear her rise.
