Reil Espino's Path: Strength & Conditioning Coach

Coach Reil Espino is the strength and conditioning (S&C) coach of the UST Growling Tigers basketball team. He also serves as an assistant professor in the Sports Science department at UST. He joins the Project Offbeat podcast to discuss sports science, a relatively new industry in the Philippines that focuses on scientific methods for athlete training. He breaks down the importance of data and research before implementing any interventions, sheds light on behind-the-scenes conversations when a player sustains an injury, and provides insights on how the government can further support this field.

List of questions include:

  • Explain the field of sports science
  • How does data and science help in managing athletes?
  • How does an S&C coach help in team play?
  • Who makes the decision if an injured athlete can play?
  • Do you get blamed if players get injured?
  • Talk to us about how you got your position in UST
  • Thoughts if your athletes seek a second opinion?
  • Athlete you've worked with w/ the best training discipline?
  • Thoughts on BMI or best metric to track fitness?
  • What should the gov't do to take this field further?
