Queena Lee-Chua's Path: Mathematician

Dr. Queena Lee-Chua is a professor for the Ateneo de Manila University, where she teaches Modern Mathematics, Probability Theory, and General Psychology. She is also a columnist for Inquirer, where she writes about family business, psychology and education.

Doc Queena, as she is fondly known, has garnered awards throughout her life; some of which are TOWNS (The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service) in 2001, Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teachers Award in 2003 and DOST’s Great Men and Women of Science in 2008.

She joins the Project Offbeat podcast to talk about the unconventional career of a mathematician and its intersections with psychology. She also talks about the importance of math appreciation for students early on.

List of questions include:

  • Talk about the rare career intersection of math and psychology
  • Where did the term math popularization come from?
  • Why didn't Doc Q go into corporate and pursue teaching instead?
  • The problem with careers on education and consultancies
  • How does Doc Q teach students to appreciate math?
  • On Angela Duckworth's book "Grit" and how Doc Q localized it
  • The role of faculty on helping with a student's mental health
