Brian Tan's Path: Effective Altruist

Brian Tan is currently a Group Support Contractor for the Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA). He is also a co-founder of Effective Altruism Philippines; which now has three local EA student chapters in Ateneo, UP Diliman, and La Salle.

He is also the co-founder of Whitebox Research, a non-profit initiative in Manila which aims to solve open research problems in AI interpretability and develop more AI safety researchers.

He joins the Project Offbeat podcast to talk about the life of an effective altruist and how he came about this unique philosophy. He also shares insights on "how to do good better," including tips on selecting the right charities for donations. Furthermore, Brian delves into his decision to prioritize the issue of AI safety in his journey within the Effective Altruism community.

List of questions include:

  • What is effective altruism (EA)?
  • What does it mean to do good better?
  • Day-to-day life of an effective altruist
  • Top careers that do the most good?
  • How did Brian happen upon this philosophy of EA?
  • How would you laymanize EA to people?
  • How are charities decided by EA?
  • Why did you focus on AI safety in Effective Altruism?
  • What's the top priority for AI safety regulations?
  • How do you get started in EA and AI safety?

  • Top problem you'd want to solve in the world today?
