Sensei John Hanratty, an 8th-degree black belt in Shotokan karate, grew up as a foster child in the rubble of post-war Liverpool, England. He overcame the odds to travel the world in the Merchant Navy, build his own businesses, and embark on a 50-plus-years journey to becoming a karate master who has taught thousands of students worldwide. His dedication to karate-do, which he views as a way of life, is as much about the development of character and inner strength as it is about developing physical skills. His story and example are of value to anyone, whether or not they've ever stepped into a dojo.
