Detox and Hospitalization

Deciding on detox can be overwhelming, but this episode breaks it down into two main scenarios: emergencies and non-emergencies. If someone is experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms, especially from alcohol, call 911 immediately as it can be life-threatening. For non-emergency situations, there are various detox options to consider. While comfort levels range from basic to luxury facilities, it's important to remember that detox is not a hotel, but a safe environment for medically supervised withdrawal. The typical stay lasts 3-10 days, but it's just the first step. A plan for further treatment like therapy or rehab is crucial for long-term recovery. Family members also play an important role. Setting boundaries and avoiding enabling behaviors can help their loved one stay focused on recovery. It's important to be realistic about costs – detox won't be the end of the financial investment, so plan for further treatment. When choosing a detox facility, make sure they provide medical care like IVs and medications. Also, understand that daily communication from the detox center shouldn't be expected. Their focus is on providing medical care for your loved one. Finally, consider using an interventionist. They can be a valuable resource in finding the right detox center and aftercare plan for a successful recovery journey.
