This novena encompasses the powerful narrative of Nuestra Señora del Carmen de San Sebastian, a revered and miraculous image in the Philippines, showcasing the devotion to the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Encased in the Minor Basilica of San Sebastian, this depiction of the Mother and Child carrying the iconic Carmel scapular represents a rich history dating back to the 17th century.

The extraordinary craftsmanship of the image, featuring the Virgin and Child crafted from precious ivory, is a testament to its captivating beauty that has inspired devotion for centuries.

Gifted to the Philippines in 1618 by Spanish Recoletos, the image symbolizes a unique connection between the Augustinian Recoletos and the Discalced Carmelites. Enshrined initially in Calumpang, it became the focal point for the present-day San Sebastian Church, inspiring the Cofradia of the Virgen del Carmen and spreading devotion throughout the region.

The construction of the magnificent all-steel Basilica is a tale of ambition and faith, conceived as a fire and earthquake-resistant structure to honor the Lady of the Brown Scapular. Architect Genaro Palacios envisioned an ambitious project, blending Earthquake Baroque with Neo-Gothic style.

The church's recognition as a National Historical Landmark and a National Treasure by the Philippine government and the National Museum attests to its historical and architectural significance. Additionally, its potential inclusion as a World Heritage Site underscores its global importance.
