Mbuya Nehanda Spirit Medium Of Zezuru Shona People of Zimbabwe
She was the spirit medium that was the inspiration behind the 1896-97 first chimurenga. When the Europeans arrived in Zimbabwe, Nehanda’s spirit medium was a woman by the name of Nyakasikana. She lived in the northern part of Zimbabwe and used her leadership to spearhead the first war of resistance (Chimurenga CheKutanga) against European domination of the region.
