Episode 37 - TW: mention of child SA. Ever wonder what it would be like growing up black, adopted, and Amish Mennonite? No tv, no playing with the opposite gender, no pants for girls and of course no women in leadership. My conversation with Bri left me fascinated, horrified and shocked at the similarities between Mormonism and Amish.

Episode 25 - Trigger Warning & Spoiler Alert: Mention of r*pe and su!c!de
We're starting off with submissions for "Oral Traditions" all about Mormon Missions today! Then we dive into the main topic, Mormonism VS Gilead (theocratic society in Handmaids Tale). I've gotten a lot of DMs about not being able to watch it because its so triggering or loving it and I wanted to break it down so that you could understand the similarities even if you've never watched Handmaid's Tale or plan on never watching it. Consider me your exmormon vid-Angel on all things Handmaids Tale! There is mention of r*pe and suicide, I don't go into any details of specifics but take care of yourself. I draw parallels with the dystopian narrative of The Handmaid's Tale and Mormonism. I discuss the control over sexuality, reproductive rights, the dynamics of patriarchy, and the societal pressures faced by women in both contexts. This episode culminates in a reflection on the importance of rebellion and self-identity in the face of oppressive structures.

Episode 22 - I'm diving into the portrayal of Mormonism in reality TV from the mid-90s to the present, focusing on key shows like 'The Real World', 'My Husband's Not Gay' and of course I had to end with this season of 'The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.' What did these shows portrayals of Mormonism get right, what do they exaggerate and why does Mormonism fascinate pop culture? Let's talk about it! I get into how these shows have shaped public perceptions of Mormon culture, confused them about the differences between the mainstream Mormon church and its offshoots, and the experiences of individuals navigating their identities within the framework of Mormon beliefs. I highlight the impact of Mormon doctrine on LGBTQ+ identities and the societal expectations placed on individuals, particularly women. The discussion also critiques the portrayal of these issues in reality TV shows, emphasizing the backlash against harmful narratives and the emotional toll on those involved. Ultimately, I reflect on how Mormonism serves as a mirror for broader American cultural themes and how it might actually be the "best" tv villain we've ever seen.
