We have seen it on many mornings
during our frequent travels
at the edges of street fences - or
at the intersection of four roads.
It takes many forms,
shape-shifting into dog, bear or wolf,
eagle, cat or buffalo.
With its lifted leg beside a telegraph post
it stares at me.
It must be many days since that animal slept.
Its eyes speak aloud
of a creature unknown to me.
The avid hunger in those eyes
makes me aware of an unknown tongue.
In distress I walk past,
telling myself that this must be
the violent language that beautiful Manamperi
and our Koneswari heard, recognised.
In the midst of my sleep that night
after the day's frenzied roaming
and its mental anguish
I too recognised
the same, the very same
deeply embedded language of violence.
Beside me, my husband lay,
his breath cooling.
