Philosophical Entertainment is a concept coined by Alan Watts, who referred to himself as a Philosophical Entertainer. Through listening to Watts, we decided to take up the mantra of making philosophy entertaining again!

Science only studies the usual, which is why our objective has been to take uncommon topics (the more taboo the better) and dive into why it makes us uncomfortable. As we settle into our fears, we find that it is what lies behind the heebie jeebies that has us scared; it is death that has us frightened. That being the case, we want to explore death and find out why we feel so unsettled with our own mortality.

Sacred Ink – Tattooing as a Portal to Presence (Part 2)
If you’re not philosophically entertained, our entertainment is only philosophical.

Season 4, Episode 9: Sacred Ink – Tattooing as a Portal to Presence (Part 2)
Episode Overview
In the second half of our deep dive with Mark Nara, founder of Tattoo Pathway, we explore tattooing as an act of becoming—one that transcends the skin and enters the soul. Mark unpacks the neuroscience of pain, the shedding of ego, and the flow state that allows art to emerge beyond the artist. We discuss how transformation unfolds not by design, but by surrender, and how pain can serve as permission to access truth. Whether inked or not, this episode invites you to examine your identity, your why, and the version of you waiting to be uncovered.
Key Topics Discussed:

Tattoos as transformation: somatic ceremony vs. artistic expression

Ego as both obstacle and amplifier

Neuroplasticity, trauma release, and the sacredness of pain

Letting go of identity through intentional discomfort

Flow state, no-mind, and the invisible hand of creation

Why the ‘why’ matters more than the ‘what’

Final Takeaways:

You don’t have many tattoos—you have one unfolding story.

Flow isn’t forced. It’s found when ego steps aside.

Transformation isn’t constructed—it’s revealed.

The real tattoo is the version of yourself you become in the process.

Pain, when conscious, is a doorway—not a punishment.
