The aim of cancer chemotherapy is to cure or prolong the remission palliation or adjuvant chemotherapy. There are numerous toxicities for the cytotoxic drugs affecting bone marrow lymphoreticular tissue gastrointestinal skin gonads fetus secondary cancers and hyperuricemia. The vinca alkaloids are microtubule inhibitors which bind to tubulin and prevent its polymerization whereas the taxol or taxanes prevent its depolymerization. They are cell cycle specific and arrest the cancer cell at mitotic phase. The topoisomerase inhibitors inhibit the topoisomerase enzymes essential to maintain the integrity of the DNA and cause cytotoxicity. The antibiotics intercalate between the DNA strands and interfere with its template function.
