South Africans took to the streets to fight for their freedom in response to the oppressive apartheid system which prevented Black South Africans from enjoying the same rights and privileges as White South Africans. Many peaceful protests were organized and participated in, but some of the protests turned violent as well, as citizens increasingly became desperate to be heard.
