52. Injury to Impact: An Athlete’s Pivot to Physiotherapy, with Stephen Frank

Stephen Frank is a former national track and field athlete who proudly represented Grenada at the 2011 CARIFTA Games in Jamaica. He was also a key member of the Westerhall Secondary School’s inaugural Intercol Games championship-winning team in 2012. Despite his early success in athletics, Stephen’s career was hindered by several season-ending injuries, leading him to seek physiotherapy treatments in Grenada and the United States. His personal experience with injury and rehabilitation sparked a deep passion to help other athletes recover, inspiring him to pursue a career in physiotherapy.

Stephen began his academic journey in Health and Physical Education at the T.A. Marryshow Community College (TAMCC). He later earned a scholarship to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy. This unique program allowed him to learn both Western and Traditional Chinese rehabilitation techniques, equipping him with a comprehensive approach to evidence-based rehabilitation.

Today, Stephen works in the Physiotherapy Department at the General Hospital in Grenada, where he is dedicated to improving patients’ recovery through evidence-based rehabilitation methods. In addition, he actively collaborates with local sports clubs and organizations to promote injury prevention and ensure athletes have access to the best rehabilitation protocols.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Stephen is passionate about cooking and works alongside his family at Franko’s Kitchen & Bar, a well-loved family-owned restaurant located in Corinth, St. David’s and True Blue, Grand Anse in Grenada.

Come along for the ride on this Fast Track!

48. Raising the Bar: Linking Law, Food & Business in Grenada, with Rosana John-Mitchell

Does a “career” really have to be just one thing? Today’s guest flips that narrative on its head as she has worked her way through from not knowing what she wanted to be, to joining one of the most traditional career fields in the Caribbean, to now running a creative business based on her interests, all while thriving in her 8-4.

Is it easy? Probably not. But you’ll learn that it IS possible - once you push past the self doubt.

Rosana John-Mitchell is an Attorney-at-Law with over 10 years of post-qualification experience. She holds a Master of Laws in Environmental Law and Policy from University College London (UCL), achieved through a Chevening Scholarship.

Rosana currently practices with Dentons, a leading global law firm, where she specializes in Real Estate and Corporate Sustainability (ESG), advising clients in Grenada and the wider Caribbean region.

In addition to her legal career, Rosana is deeply committed to community and leadership. She is an active member of the Rotary Club of Grenada and Caribbean Women in Leadership (CIWiL), and serves as a director of the Grenada Sustainable Development Trust Fund Inc., contributing to sustainable initiatives across the island.

Rosana's entrepreneurial spirit is evident as the co-founder of Spice Foodie Tours, a flourishing business that highlights local culinary experiences while promoting community-based tourism in Grenada.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Rosana is a passionate content creator for her Instagram micro-blog, Radikal Rose Eats, where she shares culinary reviews and local experiences. She also embraces an active lifestyle through fitness and enjoys exploring the world through travel.

Such great perspectives on this one. We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway!

47. Finding “Flow”: Career Pivots And Mentorship In Aerospace Engineering, with Dr. Liselle Joseph
That shaking you feel when you’re on a plane and it experiences turbulence? Or the forces at play when a spaceship re enters the earth’s atmosphere? Both are caused by very similar phenomena, and today’s guest has studied its causes and effects inside and out.  Not into engineering or mechanics? She also knows quite a bit about how to find and keep a mentor, if you’re curious about that kind of thing :)  Known in some spaces as the first woman from the OECS to attain a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Professor Liselle Joseph is currently an Assistant Professor with dual appointments with Virginia Tech’s Aerospace & Ocean Engineering department and National Security Institute. Her research focuses on hypersonic phenomenology using both experimental techniques and high-fidelity CFD. Before joining VT’s faculty, Dr. Joseph worked in industry, gaining invaluable research into current real-world engineering standards and methodologies, current needs and landscape of the community, as well as industry expectations for new graduates. Her most recent industry work involved a range of developments and research within the hypersonic flow-field. Prior to 2020, Dr. Joseph developed new compression system technologies for both commercial and military applications at Pratt and Whitney. Dr. Liselle’s varying experiences in her field adds lots of colour and practical advice to this discussion. We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway! 37. Money Moves: Finance, Investing & Personal Empowerment - with Kristina "Krissy Commerce" Charles
Managing your finances and building wealth is something "they never taught us in school". Well, we're gonna talk about it here! This episode is a bit different than most, in that we aren't focusing on our guest's 'career', but instead talking about how she taught herself about investing and developed it into a side hustle. This is your reminder that STEAM isn't just about school subjects and academic pursuits - it's about holistic development and empowering our youth and society to shape their own future, and finances is a great place to start! Kristina Charles is a 28 year old "corporate girl" who seeks to document her journey to financial independence through her 9-5 and education. She enjoys social media discussions on 9-5, mindset, side hustling, investing and altogether living a free life. Having grown up in Grenada in the Caribbean, she seeks to be an example and talk about all the taboo financial topics among young, aspiring adults. We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway! 34. Food Ecosystems, Industrial Ecology & Interdisciplinary Knowledge - with Dr. Weslynne Ashton
This episode dives into understanding how businesses and industries develop and die out in certain regions in a very evolutionary manner. Dr. Ashton talks with Arlene about what we can learn from these natural changes and how we can use the information to create more sustainable business structures. We also hear how Dr. Ashton's career developed organically, both due to her interests and to simply going through the doors that opened along the way. Dr. Weslynne Ashton is an Associate Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology with joint appointments at the Stuart School of Business and the Institute of Design. She also holds a faculty affiliate (courtesy) appointment in the Armour College of Engineering, Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Ashton is a sustainable systems scientist, whose research, teaching and practice are oriented around transitioning our socio-ecological systems towards sustainability and equity. She studies the adoption of socially and environmentally responsible strategies in business, and the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in addressing social and environmental challenges. Her research is grounded in industrial ecology and the circular economy. Her current work focuses on increasing sustainability and equity in urban food systems, and developing regenerative economies in post-industrial regions, newly industrializing countries and small island states. She was awarded a Jefferson Science Fellowship by the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in 2018. She spent the 2018-2019 academic year as a science-policy advisor at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), where she worked with the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia on strategic planning, energy policy and energy efficiency programs in the Balkans and Ukraine. Today, Kareem and Arlene chat about the experiences he had navigating life, more or less blindly, as an international student before discovering the world of remote work and diving in. They also share thoughts on Blockchain, NFTs and the Web3.0 revolution. Kareem P. Jackson is a realist, a stoic, a global citizen. A problem solver, product engineer and minimalist. An overthinker and overachiever. A Blockchain enthusiast. A curious mind, an adventurer and … we’re still on the fence about whether or not he’s human. His experiences and interests so far in life have led him to founding Unpluggd Media Group - an outlet for his passions and curiosities, a platform to share, communicate and build with the world.
