When children come to us and say '‘I’m sad my friend is moving away’ or ‘I’m sad the holiday is ending’, we often 'but' them: ‘I know, BUT you’re gonna visit your friend next month’ or ‘I see, BUT we’re gonna have another holiday in 3 months' time’.
We might do so because sadness is a difficult, even painful feeling for us to be around. Yet when we BUT our children, several messages unintentionally reach them.
In this episode, Raluca Zagura, a Certified Hand in Hand Parenting Instructor, is talking about the reasons why we feel the need to 'but' our children, what messages reach them when we do so, what our kids need from us and how we can feel more comfortable around sadness.

NOTE: In this episode, Raluca talks about those moments when children come to us and say 'I'm sad because...' - not about cases of ongoing sadness.
