Many therapists get overwhelmed even just thinking about doing couple or family therapy. Offhand it seems much easier to do individual therapy where the therapist can focus all his attention - without distraction - on the client. However, the problem with individual therapy is that we are hearing only one side of the story. When doing individual therapy we do not have access to the dynamic interchange between the client and the other ‘players’ that are part of his system. The advantage of couples and family therapy is that we get to see a more whole picture of the ‘real world’ that the client is functions within. As strange as it might sound, in some ways working with couples and families is easier than individual treatment. The reason is because even if just one person changes in family therapy, this influences everyone else.
