In this episode, Kelly chats with Leanna O’Brien, a curriculum designer and professional development creator with a passion for incorporating the essentials of music into every lesson. With a focus on the National Music Education Standards, her lessons have been implemented in over four hundred schools. Leanna is dedicated to providing elementary music educators with the tools and information they need to succeed in their classrooms. Her professional development sessions include titles such as “Movement is Music”, “Culture in the Music Classroom”, “How to Talk to Admin”, and more! For the past five years, Leanna has been using scarf dancing as a way to help her students make deeper connections in her music class. It quickly became a part of their routine, and they looked forward to the beginning of class most of all. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, Leanna was unable to connect with her students in person. Undeterred, she began making videos that were good enough to send home and get her students up and enjoying music again. Parents quickly reached out to express how much their kids missed Leanna’s music class and scarf dancing in particular. In response, Leanna created the Soaring Scarves Academy, a place where teachers who understand that movement is music and movement is learning can come to give their students a way to learn while moving to music naturally. With Leanna’s guidance, educators can incorporate the joy of music and movement into their classrooms, helping their students grow and learn in a fun and engaging way.
