This is a community bible study session from 01 August 2025.
Additional Note from after the session:
A question was asked about how we are to respond when engaging the kinds of songs that came up in the discussion. Most songs like these, even without changing the lyrics, just need to be engaged with an understanding based on truth, based on the righteousness of God and what He accomplished in Christ.
One of the songs that came up last night regarding the Holy Spirit’s work in the believer’s life, can either be engaged as making a request to the Holy Spirit, or as making a declaration of an agreement in expectation of that which He is working out in the believer. So the song can either be truth or not, depending on the understanding it is engaged with.
In some cases, we may not be able to link the lyrics to the understanding, or it might be a “stretch”, so in that case, changing the tenses would be useful, for example, from “Holy Spirit do this in me” to “Holy Spirit does this in me”, “Holy Spirit is doing this in me.”
Our worship does not depend on our circumstances, or whether we “feel” it or not. Our worship is dependent on the reality of our identity in Christ, the promises and workings of God accomplished in Christ which does not change with the happenings of the earth.
Wonder.
