What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan Ep. 11 – Wicked Stepmother & The Whales of August
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN – EP.11 – WICKED STEPMOTHER & THE WHALES OF AUGUST
“Memories last forever.”
As our journey with these two legendary leading ladies comes to a close, we look at Bette Davis’ final movie performances, the infamous dark comedy Wicked Stepmother, which was haphazardly completed despite her walking out on the production. We also look at her final dramatic turn opposite fellow Hollywood vets Lilian Gish, Vincent Price, and Ann Sothern in the little-seen drama The Whales of August. John William Law, author of Wicked Becomes Her: Bette Davis and the Story Behind Wicked Stepmother and What Ever Happened to Mommie Dearest?, returns to talk about the two final entries in a remarkable career.

Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?)
Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.

What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan – Ep 10 – Special Guest Stars
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN – EP 10 – SPECIAL GUEST STARS
“You don’t trust women very much, do you?”
Welcome to another episode of What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?, our ongoing journey through late-era Bette Davis & Joan Crawford. As we near the end of our exploration, I thought we’d pay tribute to the collection of guest appearances the two actresses made in their post-Baby Jane years. When good screen roles eluded them in the 60s and 70s, the ever-changing medium of television welcomed them with open arms. This gave Bette & Joan the ability to appear in some of the most popular shows of the era, including Perry Mason and The Virginian. These opportunities also allowed the two stars to take on a variety of characters, including businesswomen, vengeful widows, and even a jewel thief. Author of What Ever Happened to Mommie Dearest? and Wicked Becomes Her, John William Law, joins me as we take a look at Bette & Joan on the tube.

What Ever Happened To Bette & Joan? – Ep.9 – Night Gallery & Scream, Pretty Peggy
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN? EP.9 – NIGHT GALLERY & SCREAM, PRETTY PEGGY
“It occurs to me I’ve never seen your face.”
In this episode, I’m joined by the hosts of Televised: The TV Movie Story as Bette & Joan make their TV horror debuts. In 1969’s Night Gallery, Joan plays what screenwriter Rod Serling termed as “an imperious predatory dowager,” while Bette warns a college student of the darkness in her household in 1973’s Scream, Pretty Peggy. TV movie horror was in, and both stars seemed game to get in on the trend, particularly Joan whose collaboration with first-time director Steven Spielberg is wonderfully captured here. Listen as the three of us discuss which title still holds up, and which one might’ve been better staying in that room above the garage.

What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan? Ep.8 – The Karate Killers and Madame Sin
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN? EP.8 – THE KARATE KILLERS AND MADAME SIN
“How would you like your submarine, gentlemen?”
Welcome to another episode of What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?, our ongoing journey through late-era Bette Davis & Joan Crawford. This week, we watch the two divas become a pair of spy dames, by attaching themselves to a pair of projects that capitalized on the spy craze of the 60s and 70s. Although their participation was an attempt to remain in step with audience trends while distancing themselves from the horror genre, both Bette & Joan managed some real fun with these roles. Co-host of Trash in the Can and the upcoming Heart/Felt podcast, Eric Samaneigo, joins me as we look at 1967’s The Karate Killers, featuring Joan Crawford, and 1972’s Madame Sin, starring Bette Davis; two films that allow our leading ladies to delve into the spy genre with their trademark gusto and star appeal.

What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan? Ep7 – “Della” and “Where Love Has Gone”
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN? EPISODE 7 – “Della” and “Where Love Has Gone”
“You have devoted your life to mud and filth.”
In our 7th episode, we go camping with Bette & Joan in a pair of projects that aimed for artful drama but quickly devolved into exercises in laugh-out-loud camp. While the two actresses couldn’t seem to escape the grande dame guignol horror label, both Davis & Crawford attempted to distance themselves by taking on films they would have done a decade or so before. Although both 1965’s Della, starring Joan Crawford, and 1964’s Where Love Has Gone, starring Bette Davis, aimed to tell stories about complicated mothers and daughters, both can’t help but come across as overly dramatic and dated at the time they were made. Host of the podcast Window Dressing, Madelaine Jane Aubel, joins me as we witness Bette & Joan sink their teeth into their parts.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN? EPISODE 6 – I Saw What You Did and Burnt Offerings
Welcome to another episode of What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?, an ongoing journey through late-era Bette Davis & Joan Crawford. This week, our travels through grand dame guignol cinema comes to a close as we see Bette & Joan once again finding themselves unable to escape the genre that gave their careers new life following the release of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? in 1962. This time around, the two screen divas enjoy a pair of supporting roles in 1965’s I Saw What You Did featuring Joan Crawford, and 1976’s Burnt Offerings, featuring Bette Davis. While lacking in meaty material, the two films still manage to give each of them a show-stopping moment or two before they make their horrifically dramatic exits. Critic and podcaster Nathan Flynn joins me as we determine why one film is understandably tough to find and why the other is an underrated horror classic.

What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan? Episode 5 – Berserk! & The Nanny
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN? EPISODE 5 – BERSERK! & THE NANNY
Welcome to another episode of What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?, our ongoing journey on late-era Bette Davis & Joan Crawford. This week, we head across the pond to England for a pair of British chillers starring our two legendary leading ladies. After 1964’s Strait-Jacket and Dead Ringer proved to be hits for Davis & Crawford, the image of the two actresses as horror icons was all but cemented. Filmmakers of the genre were eager to strike while the iron was hot, resulting in both stars spending even more time in the world of horror with 1965’s The Nanny and 1967’s Berserk! In the latter, Crawford stars as the owner of a circus whose performers continue to meet grisly ends, while in the former, Davis leads the story of a London nanny with a seemingly powerful hold on the family who employs her. The Mistress of Mayhem herself, horror hostess Roxy Midnite, joins me as Grande Dame Guignol puts on a British accent for this pair of English thrill fests.

What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan? Episode 4 – Strait-Jacket and Dead Ringer
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN? EPISODE 4 – STRAIT-JACKET AND DEAD RINGER
On this episode, we jump in head first (no pun intended) into grande dame guignol cinema and Bette & Joan’s part in helping to establish it. After What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? proved that horror and older actresses were a winning mix, Davis & Crawford wasted no time signing on to a pair of similarly-themed films in 1964 that looked to capitalize on their newfound success. Fellow Cinapse contributor Dan Tabor joins me as we revisit Strait-Jacket starring Joan Crawford and Dead Ringer starring Bette Davis, two titles that offered up twists on the Baby Jane blueprint and helped create a new sub-genre of film.

What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan? Episode 3: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane & Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BETTE & JOAN? EPISODE 3: WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE & HUSH…HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE
“Oh, really, did she like it?”
In this sisters and cousins episode of What Ever Happened to Bette & Joan?, podcaster Jerry Downey and I look at the film that took Bette Davis and Joan Crawford from one-time studio greats to instant icons of horror. As we revisit 1962’s What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, we explore the many different facets that would help make it a horror staple and a true movie classic. We also take an equally fun look at its unofficial follow-up, 1964’s Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte, which valiantly, yet unsuccessfully, attempted to reunite the two stars for a second time.
