He argues that traditional interpretations often misread Paul's critiques of Judaism, suggesting instead that eschatology is central to understanding Paul's theology. Novenson also addresses the meaning of 'Judaism' in Paul's letters, the nature of his opponents, and the problematic use of the term 'legalism' in Pauline scholarship. In this conversation, Matthew Novenson explores the complexities of Paul's theology, particularly his views on legalism, the relationship between Jews and Gentiles, and the implications of the Christ event for both groups. He argues that Paul's letters are not merely anti-legalistic but are deeply rooted in the announcement of Christ's resurrection. Novenson also discusses how Paul's understanding of the law evolves in light of the resurrection and how it affects his ethical teachings, emphasizing the enduring importance of love as a commandment that transcends mortality.Matthew Novenson is the Helen H. P. Manson Professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary. He is also an honorary fellow in the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh, where previously he held the Chair of Biblical Criticism and Biblical Antiquities. His monographs include Christ among the Messiahs (Oxford University Press, 2012), The Grammar of Messianism (Oxford University Press, 2017), Paul, Then and Now (Eerdmans, 2022), and Paul and Judaism at the End of History (Cambridge University Press, 2024). His edited volumes include Monotheism and Christology in Greco-Roman Antiquity (Brill, 2020) and The Oxford Handbook of Pauline Studies (Oxford University Press, 2022). He is founder and co-editor of the book series Edinburgh Studies in Religion in Antiquity (Edinburgh University Press) and associate editor of the journal New Testament Studies.Grab your copy of Paul and Judaism at the End of History πŸ‘‰ https://www.amazon.com/Paul-Judaism-at-End-History/dp/1316519848/ref=sr_1_1?crid=215Q20ODLHQUF&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.2z4pzoFa6i7BW7PSiIuEBSuMU97rMhCd4PaDy8QAG_3apAj_YXtBgFlYlgyAfUYwUqwB1_5kiX-wpk3K6Z5qpAHztTD_eqF7H4MYE_xl048gRS8UExV96kBT7DSADCs4.7iynYG7tpq47jDd7GaSYICoHnyi3-btTIpSNMAVt7CY&dib_tag=se&keywords=paul+and+judaism+at+the+end+of+history&qid=1740366710&sprefix=paul+and+juda%2Caps%2C182&sr=8-1
