Ranjan Datta: Community Gardening as Rethinking Climate Crisis Adaptations | On the House #71
In an era marked by climate change, community gardens emerge as strong avenues for fostering resilience and sustainability. In this episode of On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella is joined by community disaster expert Ranjan Datta to learn more. Spearheading research as Canada Research Chair II in community disaster research at Mount Royal University, Calgary, Ranjan Datta’s research interests include advocating for indigenous environmental sustainability, and critical anti-racist climate change resilience, amongst others. With a total of 75 peer-reviewed publications to his name, Ranjan Datta has developed a strong understanding of indigenous relational research. Additionally, Ranjan Datta has been deeply involved with social well-being and justice movements, having served as board director for several community organizations. In this episode, Ranjan Datta sheds light on his first-hand experience with climate change, having witnessed his home country Bangladesh suffer a 15-degree increase in temperature in his lifetime, introducing both visible and invisible repercussions. Additionally, he reveals that rethinking climate crisis adaptations has to start on an individual level, and addresses the harms of monopoly farming. Together, Marie and Ranjan Datta discuss useful community gardening habits to practice, such as growing native plants.
