Graham Lyons: Innovative Food Security | On the House #68
At present, millions of people still face hunger and malnutrition, while the effects of climate change threaten agricultural productivity, and so, food security remains an urgent concern. So, this week on On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella speaks to research scientist Graham Lyons to learn more about the threats we face in food security, and what we can do about it from our homes. Based in South Australia, Graham Lyons also serves as the international agriculture and human health program manager at the University of Adelaide. His career in agriculture took root in family farms that he managed until 1997. Graham Lyons then went on to study public health, and completed a PhD on selenium in wheat and humans in 2004. Since then, he has worked across the globe, from China and Tibet, to East Africa and Colombia.  In this episode, Graham Lyons starts out by describing food security as the provision of adequate food and nutrition into the foreseeable future. He then cites a decline in fertility from the 1930s onwards as an indicator of food insecurity taking place, combined with other factors. Together, Marie and Graham Lyons weigh up various facets of gardening sustainability at home, from mulching, integrating pest-management plants, and inorganic fertilizers, to composting and kitchen waste. So, tune in this week for an eye-opening conversation about tackling food insecurity in our households!
