Kabaka Pyramid (part 1) | Uptown Top Rasta | chapter 001
I went down to Bebble Rock studio to speak with passionate rebel and member of the neo-roots movement, Kabaka Pyramid. The highly-rated Jamaican musician comes from uptown (middle-class) Kingston, Jamaica but his purpose is very much for the voiceless. I wanted to find out how and why.
We spoke about questioning Christianity transition to Rasta (as a "breakaway"), studying in Florida then moving back to Jamaica, plus discrimination he faces being a Rastafarian in Jamaica. He also explained his distrust of politicians, reasons for not voting, "school is a fallacy" lyric, and his purpose to "awaken the minds of the people".
Kabaka's incredibly socially-aware, intellectual and articulate so we kept part 1 more about what shaped him, his lifestyle, beliefs and ultimately, his lyrics. The environment and society side of things as well as the political and spiritual. He did speak on surreal experience working with every roots revival artists' icon, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, who produced song of the year contender, 'Well Done'. More music stuff in part 2.
