Op Curaçao komen de meeste kinderen met de auto naar school, een paar met kleine busjes. Een enkeling komt te voet. Deuren openen, slaan dicht, er wordt gegroet, getoeterd, uit een enkele auto stroomt een beat die met ’t wegrijden weer vervliegt. Dan meer kinderen, lachend, over de gang rennend, schuiven met stoelen. Tot de juffen en meesters, door de openstaande ramen goed te horen, iedereen tot rust proberen te krijgen. English Tirzo Martha School We stare at the school fence in the dark. A mockingbird, calling out at the top of its voice the first rays of the sun; the roosters appear to be nothing to it. In the distance, the low hum of traffic. A car brings the first student. In Curaçao, most children come to school by car, and a few by small vans. A few come on foot. Doors open and slam shut, people greet and honk, and a beat flows from the occasional car, which dissipates as it drives away. Then more children, laughing, running along the corridor, shuffling chairs. Until the teachers, who can be heard through the open windows, try to calm everyone down. The children are not ready yet. A dog paces, panting along the fence.
