What is beauty and why does it matter? For our Halloween episode, self-taught freelance make-up artist and model Sylvina “Slo” Lopez shares the power of make-up for identity, self-expression, and transformation. (As she points out, there’s a reason that totalitarian regimes throughout history have despised make-up.)
Famous for her magazine covers, editorials, event make-up, commercial work, and music video looks, Slo has also done workshops for MAC, NARS, Make Up For Ever, and Issy & Co, as well as product development for different beauty brands. When not doing make-up, Slo models for brands like Avon, H&M, and Float Swimwear, a profession she fell into by accident, but one which allows her to continue representing her ideas of beauty on the other side of the camera.
She discusses how finding your identity is tied to the way you choose to present yourself, the high level of trust and empathy required in her work, and how she kept creativity and collaboration alive under lockdown. We also discuss inclusivity in the beauty world, and loving the skin you’re in.
This episode is dedicated to anyone who was ever told to straighten their curls, hide their curves, or cover up their tattoos.
