SPOILER FILLED SUMMARY: In the film, we are introduced to Spike, a 12 year old who lives on this secluded island with his father Jamie, and his sick mother Isla. Jamie takes Spike out on his first adventure into the mainland where the infected are quarantined, and he is taught how to kill and survive amongst the infected. Desperate for help, Spike sneaks out his mother to visit a rumored doctor that lives in the mainland. Along the way they come across a pregnant infected who gives birth to a healthy baby. When they arrive, Dr. Kelson diagnoses Isla with cancer, which means he is not able to cure her. He ends her suffering and her remains are added to the top of the skull monument. Spike returns to the island only to leave the baby with a note explaining the situation. Spike then goes out on his own to experience the mainland through his own eyes.
