Mould-breaking Musical Theatre with Dr Meghan Perry and Robin Hiley

What do you get when you mix musical theatre with antimicrobial resistance -and throw in Alexander Fleming for good measure?

To kick off season five of Not Another Science Podcast, we talk to Dr Meghan Perry, an infectious diseases doctor and researcher who embarked on a somewhat unusual scientific adventure to spread the word about the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through song and dance. Alongside musician and composer Robin Hiley, they created ‘The Mould That Changed the World’, a musical telling the story of Alexander Fleming, his discovery of penicillin, and its relevance to the world today. The show is currently bursting onto the US stage, with performances in Atlanta and Washington DC in October and November 2022, fresh from its successful third run at the Edinburgh Fringe this summer.

This conversation taught us a lot about Fleming’s life, antibiotics, and the emotional power that musical theatre can conjure up. Listen out for some ceilidh music in an exclusive snippet from the show!
