Leading When It's Raining: 4 Principles To Be The Leader Your Team Needs When the Road Gets Tough

In this episode of the Nonprofit Launch Plan Podcast, host Matt Stockman shares four essential principles for leading your team through difficult seasons. Every nonprofit faces storms—whether it's staff turnover, a shift in funding, or external political changes. How a leader responds during these times can define the future of the organization.

Matt shares a story about a client who took over a small nonprofit after the founder's passing, only to find it in disarray. The new leader made difficult but necessary changes, leading to a period of uncertainty and fear among the team. He emphasizes that as a leader, you are the "thermostat" for your organization, and your team looks to you not just for direction, but for a sense of calm and reassurance.

When your nonprofit is going through a tough season, your team is likely struggling with subconscious fears about job security and the organization's future. As a leader, you have a responsibility to guide them through this, and these four principles can help you do it effectively.

The 4 Guiding Principles for Leading Through a Storm

  1. Be Clear: As the saying goes, "Clarity is kindness." During a crisis, your team members' minds are clouded with fear and uncertainty. It's your job to communicate with absolute clarity about your expectations, what the next steps are, and what is needed from each person. Vague statements only add to the fear.
  2. Be Honest: Keep your communication factual and grounded in reality. Be honest about what you know and what you don't know. Your team needs a leader who will face the storm with them, not one who pretends it's not happening. Avoid being overly optimistic or pessimistic and stick to the facts.
  3. Be Calm: It's easy to react to every new problem like a five-alarm emergency. However, a calm and measured response communicates to your team that they can trust you. Take a moment to pause, evaluate the situation, and then respond thoughtfully. This leadership approach is the difference between reacting in a panic and responding with wisdom.
  4. Be Swift: Avoid "analysis paralysis." While it's important to do your homework, your team needs a leader with the confidence to make a decision and commit to a plan. As the "quarterback" of your team, you need to call the play. Your team will be inspired by your decisiveness and confidence.

Matt concludes by reinforcing that these principles will not only help you navigate tough seasons but also build a stronger, more resilient organization and a more cohesive team for the future.
