NHL Trade Talk Episode 30 - The 2023 NHL Entry Draft

This episode was all about the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Brooke and Jim are back to dive into the top picks, including Connor Bedard going to the Chicago Blackhawks, whether the Anaheim Ducks went off the board taking Leo Carlsson and what to make of Matvei Michkov falling to the Philadelphia Flyers. Did he orchestrate his way there and was it a gamble by the Flyers to take him at No. 7?

We talk about the Arizona Coyotes going off the board, the lack of trades in the first round, and some of the more emotional moments, including the consistent appreciation for former Nashville Predators' GM David Poile and the Columbus Blue Jackets making a trade so they could take Tyler Peddle.

NHL Trade Talk Podcast - Ep. 28 - 2023 NHL Trade Deadline Winners and Losers

In this episode of NHL Trade Talk the podcast, Brooke and Jim break down their winners and losers for NHL Trade Deadline week. Because deadline day was so slow, it's hard to designate a winner and loser on a day that normally offers a lot to discuss. We'll take a look at our favorite deals, and our least favorite team decisions and try to answer why the final day for teams to make trades was such a dud.

NHL Trade Talk Episode 27: Ekholm, Kane, Sandin and others All Traded

On a busy Tuesday in the NHL -- not for games, but for trades -- a number of big deals took place ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline. Mattias Ekholm went to the Edmonton Oilers for Tyson Barrie and picks, Patrick Kane officially became a New York Ranger, Toronto kept making moves and there are still plenty of names left on the table that could be dealt in over the course of the next 48-72 hours.

NHL Trade Talk Podcast - Episode 26 - NHL Trade Deadline: Meier, McCabe More
In this episode, we talk about the NHL Trade Deadline and some big names that have come off of the board days ahead of March 3rd. Timo Meier has been traded to New Jersey, Sam Lafferty, and Jake McCabe have gone to Toronto and Tanner Jeannot goes to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a deal that many are viewing as a pretty big overpay. Brooke and Jim will dissect all of these trades, including some others, and talk about what we expect to happen as the deadline nears.

NHL Trade Talk Podcast - Ep. 25 - Ryan O'Reilly Traded to the Maple Leafs

In this episode, Jim and Brooke break down the trade between the St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs that saw Ryan O'Reilly and Noel Acciari go to the Maple Leafs. This was a big three-team trade that included the Minnesota Wild and it says a few things about all three teams. The Maple Leafs are going for it, having given up four draft picks to make this deal. The Blues are likely selling now, having moved three big pieces from their roster. The Wild are weaponizing their cap space this season and they could do more of these kinds of trades.

Is this a move that is going to pay off for Toronto and GM Kyle Dubas? They have next to no draft picks left to make other deals for big-name deadline names and if they aren't done, they'll need to move prospects or players off of their roster.

Are the Blues going in a different direction? Or, is there a chance that O'Reilly could rejoin the team this summer and sign an extension?

NHL Trade Talk Podcast-Ep 24: Chychrun, Gavrikov, Weegar, Kane

On this episode, Brooke and Jim discuss some of the latest trade buzz as the NHL is two weeks away from the 2023 trade deadline. Among the popular rumors, both Jakob Chychrun and Vladislav Gavrikov were pulled from their respective lineups for "trade-related reasons". There's also speculation surrounding Patrick Kane's interest in the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Edmonton Oilers trying to make a deal for Erik Karlsson work, and the fact the Calgary Flames might actually test the trade waters with MacKenzie Weegar.

Is Patrick Kane going to fetch the return the Blackhawks want? Is he really only limiting his options to the Maple Leafs or New York Rangers? Would the Flames consider trading Weegar right after acquiring him and signing him to an 8-year deal? Will anyone want that contract? And, are trades for Chychrun and Gavrikov imminent?

NHL Trade Talk Podcast: Ep. 23 - Oilers In On Kane, Karlsson Deals

In this impromptu episode, Brook and Jim break down the two reports from reputable NHL insiders Mark Spector and Chris Johnston that the Edmonton Oilers might be closer on deals with the Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks regarding Patrick Kane and Erik Karlsson. Obviously, the team can't do both, but are either trades realistic considering the Oilers' salary cap situation?

Are the Blackhawks willing to retain and take back money? Will the Sharks keep more of Karlsson's deal to make a move possible? And, will either player be willing to waive to go to Edmonton? Plus, will the Oilers give up what it takes in terms of assets to land either star?

NHL Trade Talk - Episode 22: Tarasenko Traded to New York Rangers

During this episode of the podcast, Brooke and Jim dissect the Vladimir Tarasenko trade that sends himself and defenseman Niko Mikkola to the Rangers in exchange for a conditional 2023 1st-round pick, a conditional 2024 4th-round pick, prospect Hunter Skinner, and Sammy Blais. The Blues retain 50 percent of Tarasenko's salary in the move.

For the Rangers, this means no Patrick Kane or Timo Meier and they're going to start making their playoff push now.

Also, we discuss the Bo Horvat extension with the New York Islanders, what's going on with Patrick Kane, the goaltending in Toronto, Bruce Boudreau signing with the NHL Network and more.

NHL Trade Talk Episode 21 - Bo Horvat Trade, Mark Stone Injury

During this episode of NHL Trade Talk the podcast, Brooke and Jim talk about the Bo Horvat trade that saw the Vancouver Canucks send the center to the New York Islanders for F Anthony Beauvillier, C Aatu Raty, and a protected 2023 1st-round draft pick. The Islanders jumped in here quickly and got this done. What does that mean? Is Horvat their meal ticket to the playoffs? What if they don't get in? Will he be flipped again? What else might the Islanders do?

From a Canucks' perspective, why did GM Patrik Allvin shop the trade to see if he could get a better deal?

In other news, Mark Stone underwent successful back surgery on Tuesday, January 31, and is expected to make a full recovery. He will be out of the lineup indefinitely. If he’s out for the rest of the regular season — which seems possible — the Golden Knights could open up considerable cap space (over $12 million) by placing him on LTIR. A big trade is likely in an effort to try and replace some of his production, even though the player himself will be nearly impossible to replace.

NHL Trade Talk Episode 20 - Bruce Boudreau Fired, Plus More 2023 NHL Trade Deadline Buzz

On this episode of NHL Trade Talk the podcast, Brooke and Jim talk about the firing of former Vancouver Canucks head coach Bruce Boudreau. Did the Canucks handle this properly? Boudreau was left hanging on the line while the team waited for Rick Tocchet's TNT deal to expire. Could this have gone down differently and will it affect the Canucks' ability to acquire players and future staff?

Also, what's the latest talk surrounding Bo Horvat and his inevitable trade out of Van City? We also chat the Carolina and the injury news to Max Pacioretty, Cole Caufield going down for the Montreal Canadiens and what they'll do, plus the latest scoop on other teams. The Edmonton Oilers, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, and others are teams we're keeping an eye on.

NHL Trade Talk Episode 19 - Connor Bedard: How Good Will He Be?

On this episode of NHL Trade Talk the podcast, Brooke and Jim discuss just how good a World Junior Tournament Connor Bedard had, how many teams are now in the running for Bedard and what he might be able to do at the NHL level. More than that, people are already talking about how good Bedard could eventually be and if he'll ever reach the heights of someone like Connor McDavid.

This show features the Connor vs. Connor debate as we go through the skills and features of each player, their strengths and (few) weaknesses, and how NHL teams will react to potentially getting Bedard in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.

Episode 15 - Ethan Bear Trade, Maple Leafs Struggles, Blackhawks Rebuild
In this episode, Brooke and Jim discuss the Ethan Bear trade that sent the defenseman from the Carolina Hurricanes to the Vancouver Canucks. Why did Vancouver make the deal and will it be good for Bear who needed a fresh start? Were the Toronto Maple Leafs in on trade discussions and what is going on there with a team that has struggled mightily? Finally, are the Chicago Blackhawks still planning to sell of most of their players despite winning a lot more hockey games than anyone might have expected?

NHL Trade Talk Podcast - Ep. 13 - Drafting Our 2022-23 NHL Fantasy Team

In this episode, Brooke and Jim take part in the annual Hockey Writers NHL Fantasy Draft and we make our selections and build a team. Drafting in the No. 12 spot, we knew we wouldn't get a top-five player, so the question became, how do we start our team? Do we take one of the best goalies available? Do we go with a forward or a defenseman?

This was Brooke's first fantasy draft so we talked through each decision while on the clock and I believe we got a pretty solid team, all things considered. You can check out our entire finished roster at nhltradetalk.com.

NHL Trade Talk - Episode 12 - Jason Robertson and Jakob Chychrun Issues

In this episode, Jim and Brooke talk all about the issues between the Dallas Stars and Jason Robertson, plus the lack of a trade involving Jakob Chychrun out of Arizona. These two players have different issues with their respective teams, but both are big names the hockey world is keeping an eye on and it's hard to understand why these deals aren't done yet.

Is Jason Robertson asking for too much? Is he stuck on wanting a long-term deal instead of a bridge contract? Is he looking at the potential jump in salary cap in the next few seasons and wanting to make sure he works that into his negotiations?

As for Chychrun, why hasn't he been traded? Is it the ask from the Coyotes? Is it Chychrun's injury and health concerns? Has his stock simply fallen? Or is this a salary cap problem for teams that might be interested?
