On a busy Tuesday in the NHL -- not for games, but for trades -- a number of big deals took place ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline. Mattias Ekholm went to the Edmonton Oilers for Tyson Barrie and picks, Patrick Kane officially became a New York Ranger, Toronto kept making moves and there are still plenty of names left on the table that could be dealt in over the course of the next 48-72 hours.

In this episode, Jim and Brooke break down the trade between the St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs that saw Ryan O'Reilly and Noel Acciari go to the Maple Leafs. This was a big three-team trade that included the Minnesota Wild and it says a few things about all three teams. The Maple Leafs are going for it, having given up four draft picks to make this deal. The Blues are likely selling now, having moved three big pieces from their roster. The Wild are weaponizing their cap space this season and they could do more of these kinds of trades.
Is this a move that is going to pay off for Toronto and GM Kyle Dubas? They have next to no draft picks left to make other deals for big-name deadline names and if they aren't done, they'll need to move prospects or players off of their roster.
Are the Blues going in a different direction? Or, is there a chance that O'Reilly could rejoin the team this summer and sign an extension?

On this episode, Brooke and Jim discuss some of the latest trade buzz as the NHL is two weeks away from the 2023 trade deadline. Among the popular rumors, both Jakob Chychrun and Vladislav Gavrikov were pulled from their respective lineups for "trade-related reasons". There's also speculation surrounding Patrick Kane's interest in the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Edmonton Oilers trying to make a deal for Erik Karlsson work, and the fact the Calgary Flames might actually test the trade waters with MacKenzie Weegar.
Is Patrick Kane going to fetch the return the Blackhawks want? Is he really only limiting his options to the Maple Leafs or New York Rangers? Would the Flames consider trading Weegar right after acquiring him and signing him to an 8-year deal? Will anyone want that contract? And, are trades for Chychrun and Gavrikov imminent?

In this impromptu episode, Brook and Jim break down the two reports from reputable NHL insiders Mark Spector and Chris Johnston that the Edmonton Oilers might be closer on deals with the Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks regarding Patrick Kane and Erik Karlsson. Obviously, the team can't do both, but are either trades realistic considering the Oilers' salary cap situation?
Are the Blackhawks willing to retain and take back money? Will the Sharks keep more of Karlsson's deal to make a move possible? And, will either player be willing to waive to go to Edmonton? Plus, will the Oilers give up what it takes in terms of assets to land either star?

During this episode of the podcast, Brooke and Jim dissect the Vladimir Tarasenko trade that sends himself and defenseman Niko Mikkola to the Rangers in exchange for a conditional 2023 1st-round pick, a conditional 2024 4th-round pick, prospect Hunter Skinner, and Sammy Blais. The Blues retain 50 percent of Tarasenko's salary in the move.
For the Rangers, this means no Patrick Kane or Timo Meier and they're going to start making their playoff push now.

During this episode of NHL Trade Talk the podcast, Brooke and Jim talk about the Bo Horvat trade that saw the Vancouver Canucks send the center to the New York Islanders for F Anthony Beauvillier, C Aatu Raty, and a protected 2023 1st-round draft pick. The Islanders jumped in here quickly and got this done. What does that mean? Is Horvat their meal ticket to the playoffs? What if they don't get in? Will he be flipped again? From a Canucks' perspective, why did GM Patrik Allvin shop the trade to see if he could get a better deal?
In other news, Mark Stone underwent successful back surgery on Tuesday, January 31, and is expected to make a full recovery. He will be out of the lineup indefinitely. If he’s out for the rest of the regular season — which seems possible — the Golden Knights could open up considerable cap space (over $12 million) by placing him on LTIR. A big trade is likely in an effort to try and replace some of his production, even though the player himself will be nearly impossible to replace.

In this episode, Brooke and Jim take part in the annual Hockey Writers NHL Fantasy Draft and we make our selections and build a team. Drafting in the No. 12 spot, we knew we wouldn't get a top-five player, so the question became, how do we start our team? Do we take one of the best goalies available? Do we go with a forward or a defenseman?

In this episode, Jim and Brooke talk all about the issues between the Dallas Stars and Jason Robertson, plus the lack of a trade involving Jakob Chychrun out of Arizona. These two players have different issues with their respective teams, but both are big names the hockey world is keeping an eye on and it's hard to understand why these deals aren't done yet.
Is Jason Robertson asking for too much? Is he stuck on wanting a long-term deal instead of a bridge contract? Is he looking at the potential jump in salary cap in the next few seasons and wanting to make sure he works that into his negotiations?
As for Chychrun, why hasn't he been traded? Is it the ask from the Coyotes? Is it Chychrun's injury and health concerns? Has his stock simply fallen? Or is this a salary cap problem for teams that might be interested?
