In 1698 BS the king of Kantipur was imprisoned by his son Pratap Malla, claiming that his father was mentally imbalanced and thus unfit to continue as a king. Pratap Malla then became the king of Kantipur and later on some incidents occured in his life such that he established a system of Gai Jatra. which is popular still today. This story of Gai Jatra is a mixture of love, tragedy and sprituality. Thee carnival or festival Gai Jatra, also known as the carnival of death, is still celebrated each year in Nepal.
