In this episode, cohost David Stuss and I interview retired University of Arizona professor and anesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff about the Orchestrated Objective Reduction theory of consciousness and what it may say about the development of life and consciousness in the universe.
The ORCH-OR theory, by Hameroff and physicist Roger Penrose, proposes that consciousness occurs with quantum wave function collapse, and that in the human brain, this process occurs predominantly in the microtubule structures that exist within neurons.
Hameroff in this interview explains the genesis of this theory, the proof so far accumulated, and explains how ORCH-OR compares to other theories.
Consciousness precedes life, Hameroff argues, perhaps even providing the motivation for its development.
Hameroff also explains how the theory provides a basis for many anomalies that remain otherwise unexplained, such as near-death experiences, psi phenomena, and sundry.
Hameroff also takes on many of his critics, and addresses several oft-repeated arguments against ORCH-OR, including the idea that the brain is too warm and wet to host quantum processes.
