What is Comparative Suffering? Why Is It Dangerous? + How To Put An End To It

THROWBACK EPISODE -

This episode is one I recorded nearly 3 years ago! WILD, I KNOW! So you'll hear a different intro and some things may be a *little* off.

Otherwise this episode is one I really want to highlight and hope it's a topic you get some value from.

In today's episode we are talking about comparative suffering, ever heard of it? Don't worry I'll fill you in! Look we have all been on the giving and receiving end of this and it's okay, but, we need to make sure we are being conscious about the words we use to someone who is suffering. Suffering is subjective, what you might deem insignificant is a traumatic event for someone else, so it's important to know that suffering doesn't have to come from some extreme earth shattering event. If someone comes to you with a problem they're facing, your automatic response shouldn't be to one up them with something you or someone you know is going through that's harder than what they're experiencing.

Sometimes (emphasis on the some!) people respond in a way of comparing with good intentions, or to show that they understand where the other person is coming from, but it does more harm than good. Perhaps you're not great at consoling people who are going through a hard time. Maybe you struggle to empathise with people. You might be coming from a good place but your words don't reflect that. If any of these ring true for you we go through ways to avoid comparative suffering when speaking to someone else and how to address it if someone is doing it to you.

This is a really important topic to me, I wanted to bring light to this because it's one of the main reasons there is such a stigma around mental health and seeking any form of therapy. As a coach, I've seen this really destroy peoples confidence and even their willingness to get help. It has to stop and it starts with us.

As always I want to thank you for taking the time to listen and if you enjoyed this episode I would be so grateful if you'd rate and write a review on iTunes it would mean the world to me. xx
