How to Repair Communication After a Conflict
In this episode of the Music and Therapy podcast Keana explains how repair attempts are small but powerful gestures that help de-escalate tension and reconnect emotionally. She shares:
• 🔄 What repair attempts are: Verbal or nonverbal actions that signal a desire to reconnect after conflict.
• 🧠 Why they matter: According to Gottman, the success of a relationship isn’t about avoiding conflict it’s about how effectively partners repair after it.
• 💬 Examples of repair attempts:
o “Can we take a break and come back to this?”
o “I didn’t mean to hurt you can we talk?”
o A gentle touch, a shared laugh, or even a sincere apology.
• 🛠️ How to use them intentionally:
o Recognize when emotions are escalating.
o Pause and offer a repair attempt before things spiral.
o Stay open to receiving repair attempts from your partner.
• ❤️ Why repair attempts build emotional safety:
o They show humility, empathy, and a willingness to prioritize connection over being right.
o They help both people feel seen and valued even in disagreement.
Keana also reflects on how these tools can be used not just in romantic relationships, but in friendships, family dynamics, and even spiritual communities.
