Whether you’re moving for work, love, or lifestyle, one truth remains: relocating is about more than the destination. From Hungary to Ireland with Gabriella Kovac

In this episode, Clare is joined by Gabriella Kovac who is Hungarian and who has been living in County Limerick, Ireland for 14 years, with her family. Gabriella provides some great insights into settling into and giving birth in a new country, raising bilingual children, and why living thousands of miles away from your family does not always result in seeing less of them.

Gabriella also explains why they only plan for 2 to 3 years, why they are thinking of moving to Spain soon, and how one of her husbands´s childhood toy memories has inspired a new business venture.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When you factor in the fact that you usually use a plane to see family, moving to another country can cut the amount of time spent traveling to see them.
  • Gabriella has found the Irish to be very friendly and respectful of others.
  • Children adapt fast and enjoy living across two cultures.
  • Taking the time to teach your children the language of your home country brings many benefits. Including, helping your children to be more confident.
  • Often, moving abroad puts you in situations, which change the family dynamic. It is important to be prepared for this.
  • Everything changing can be stressful but take the time to enjoy the experience of discovering new things.
  • If possible involve your children in choosing your new home and deciding how to decorate it.

BEST MOMENTS

“Despite the fact that we are here in Ireland, and they are in Hungary, we spend a long time together.”

“It's amazing how quickly kids just pick up the language from other children.”

“I just love the respect between people here, Irish people are absolutely a good example of how we should treat each other as people.”

“Connection and collaboration is key whether it´s within the community or wider .”
