Solomon began his reign humbly, seeking God’s wisdom and initially walking in His ways, but early compromises—such as political marriages—set the stage for disobedience. Despite building the temple and achieving unmatched wealth and wisdom, Solomon ignored God’s clear commands in Deuteronomy for kings: not multiplying wives, wealth, or horses from Egypt. His foreign marriages ultimately turned his heart toward idolatry, leading to God’s judgment and the eventual division of the kingdom. Continual obedience to God’s Word guards leaders from pride, compromise, and downfall.
