Host Michael Carroll sits down with his long-time friend Susan Piver to talk about community, creativity, pain, loneliness, and other things we're afraid of. They also discuss how applying mindfulness impacts how we run a business, how we teach, and how we learn.
Susan is a teacher and a New York Times bestselling author of nine books including The Hard Questions and The Four Noble Truths of Love. She teaches workshops and speaks on mindfulness, innovation, communication, relationships, and creativity. Susan's Open Heart Project is the largest virtual mindfulness community in the world.
Stay tuned to the end of the show to hear about the new book she’s working on and some exciting events she has coming up.
Michael and Susan have both spent many years studying Buddhism, and they occasionally use some terms that might be unfamiliar:
Sangha — Buddhist community
Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, and Vajrapani’ — three personifications of Buddhist ideals: wisdom, compassion, and bravery
Warrior — in Tibetan Buddhist traditions, one who combats the universal enemy: self-ignorance
Dharma — Buddhist teachings
Taking Your Seat — committing to practice of meditation and the path toward enlightenment
The View — seeing the world clearly as it is, as opposed to seeing it through the filter of our habitual patterns
Susan also mentions the Enneagram, which is a model of the human psyche mapped out into 9 interconnected personality types. This is not a Buddhist term, though her next project will explore the Enneagram through a Buddhist lens.
