Vid tiden för Karl XII:s död var Sveriges ekonomiska tillstånd svårt, framför allt med en allvarlig brist på manliga arbetskraft. Men resurserna var inte helt uttömda. Orsaken till att Sveriges militära förmåga paralyserades var istället en självförvållad finanskris. Peter Ericsson berättar om Karl XII:s finansiella reformer som var ämnade att finansiera kriget, om hur de under några år på 1710-talet ledde till en social omfördelning av resurser, och om och hur rikets ledning efter kungens död medvetet kraschade statsfinanserna för att kompensera sig själva och för att återställa den socio-ekonomiska ordningen.
