410 | Suicide Prevention Awareness: The Changing Language of Suicide

The words we use to talk about suicide are shifting. In recognition of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, host Erin Gentry is joined by Mercy’s Assistant Counseling Director, Leslie Lamb, a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor. Together, they explore how language around suicide has evolved, why those changes matter, and how our words can either open the door to healing or reinforce stigma.

Leslie shares insights from her professional experience and personal journey, offering clarity and compassion on a topic that is often difficult to discuss. This episode is a call to create space for people, listen well, and choose our words wisely.

In this episode, we cover:

  • How social media, censorship, and cultural shifts have influenced the language of suicide.
  • How language affects survivors, loved ones, and those struggling with suicidal ideation.
  • Practical ways to hold space for others and show compassion, even when we don’t fully understand.
