S3 Ep. 2 - What Makes a Villain? with Julia and Becca from TGTBATB

Welcome to another episode of Mental Health Multiverse: A podcast where we mindfully break down your pop culture favs and discuss them through the lens of self care, mental health, and personal development.

In this episode, HB & LB are joined by two amazing and fun guests – Julia Rago and Becca Majors – to explore the intricate world of Disney and Pixar villains!!

We analyze what constitutes a compelling antagonist by examining motivations, backstories, and moral structures of characters like Kylo Ren, Mother Gothel, Hades, Captain Hook, Scar, and Cruella, as well as consider how we might view potential "villains" in our lives.

Julia Rago and Becca Majors are two best friends who love talking plot, character, and narrative analysis. While not moonlighting as film and TV critics, Julia works as a graphic artist and illustrator, and Becca is pursuing creative writing and interior design. Currently, their combined powers of media analysis are showcased on their podcast “The Good, The Bad, & The Batch,” a story & character analysis fancast originally about Star Wars: The Bad Batch, but now branching to any and all Star Wars media! It can be found wherever you get podcasts and on Instagram and Tumblr @thebatchpod. Julia and Becca can be reached on Instagram @juliarago and @beckscurios

Questions, themes, and topics we touch on include:

  • Why are we sometimes drawn to villains?
  • Why do we sometimes root for them?
  • How do we navigate villains in our own lives?
  • The concept of a fate worse than death
  • Redemption & empathy as drivers for good storytelling
  • Archetypical relationships in real life
  • And more!
