Toxic Positivity: It’s Not Good Vibes Only, it’s All Vibes Always
This episode deals with toxic positivity. It’s everywhere you look. On shirts, on wall art, in television shows and movies, everywhere. I grew up with toxic positivity, it was a constant in my childhood and young adult life. I think Gen Xers have dealt with toxic positivity, and now can recognize it for what it’s worth. Life is not always “good vibes only.” I’m 56 now and I can see it. I can recognize it and I can get past it. This episode has played in my head for days. I watched BEEF on Netflix with Ali Wong and I related to Amy’s character on so many levels. I could see how George her husband character in the show shut her up with his strong sense of toxic positivity. So many people in my life shut me down and hushed me up with their toxic positivity. So many times I was told you’re crazy, calm down, and really calm and to look for a silver lining. Being told that things happen for a reason or to accept it because things could be worse were the adult’s way of coping.
