Project MKULTRA, a highly controversial CIA programme involving human experimentation to develop mind control techniques using drugs and other methods.

Initiated in 1953, partly in response to perceived "brainwashing" by North Korea, the project aimed to control human behaviour for intelligence purposes, often using unwitting subjects.

While many records were destroyed in 1973, subsequent discoveries and Congressional hearings in 1977 revealed details of various subprojects, including LSD administration, sensory deprivation, and psychological manipulation, sometimes conducted at private institutions and without informed consent.
