Mental health is a taboo subject in Urban communities, yet 20-25% of people in America have a diagnosable mental health illness, and most go without treatment. I recently came out of a bout with depression I had no idea I was fighting. When I began sharing my story, I received a flood of responses from people who had similar experiences but never shared them with anyone. It’s time we shift the conversation and change the culture, Mask Off hosted by Hawaii Mike, is here to open the dialogue through life and mental health in our hip hop community and we invite you to join the conversation.

Mask Off with Hawaii Mike episode #21: MICK

From being the overlooked kid in Youngstown, Ohio to becoming a celebrated DJ, entrepreneur, and father, MICK (formerly Mick Boogie) joins Hawaii Mike for a revealing convo on identity, transformation and the mental health awareness.  They dive into what it means to wear masks in public and in private, the power of embracing your past and how curation and creativity can change your life.

  • - Lessons from DJing in Cleveland and why your limitations can define your sound

  • - The emotional weight of being introverted in an extroverted industry

  • - Full-circle moments with De La Soul and the photo that sums up his whole career
