Olympic Medallist - Barry Magee

Barry won an Olympic Bronze Medal in the Marathon at the 1960 Olympics. He was ranked #1 in the world over 10,000m & the Marathon for multiple years, and #2 in the world for 5000m in 1960. He also Won Gold at the World Games (which was a predecessor to what is now known as the world championships).

He was also a part of the team that broke the 4x 1 mile Relay World Record. Barry has gone on to coach many great athletes and was recently awarded the Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to sport.

Barry was aged 89 when we filmed this episode, so it was a blessing to have him on the podcast to share his wisdom from the last 89 years of his life.

In this Episode, Barry talks about:

  • How his early life shaped who he is today
  • Why Arthur Lydiard was the greatest coach ever
  • His Faith in God & Life Lessons he'd pass on to a 20 year old
  • Why his favourite movie is Chariots of Fire
